When You Visit a Buddhist Vihara or Shrine
- When visiting a Buddhist vihara (monastery) or shrine, it is customary to remove your shoes as a sign of respect.
- It is advisable not to offer a handshake to monks or nuns, as this is not part of their tradition.
- Buddhists often meditate before an image of the Buddha and make offerings such as:
- Flowers
- Fruit
- Incense
- Light
- Water
- Many Buddhists also visit temples or stupas (mound-like hemispherical structures) where relics of the Buddha, saints, and spiritual teachers are enshrined.
