Important Practices and Customs
- Caste System: The caste system is a complex form of social organization that still plays a role in Hindu families, particularly in important matters such as marriage, food, and dress customs. There are four major castes, with the Brahmin (priestly) caste being the highest. In Britain, caste rules are often relaxed, but some Hindus may still follow them strictly.
- When entering a Hindu home, it is best not to shake hands unless the other person makes the first move.
- Remove your shoes when entering a Hindu temple (Mandir).
- You may be offered a piece of fruit or some sweets when leaving a Hindu temple. It is polite to accept them.
- It is preferable for a man not to speak to a Hindu woman alone. It is better if her husband or another family member is present.
