When You Visit a Jewish Household
- You may notice a small box attached to the right doorpost known as a Mezuzah, containing a parchment with parts of the Shema.
- Jews often touch the Mezuzah as a sign of respect when entering their home.
- Inside the home, you may see symbolic items such as:
- Chanukiah: A candelabrum lit during Hanukkah.
- No images of God are found in Jewish homes, as this is against religious practice.
- The Jewish Sabbath, known as Shabbat, begins at sunset on Friday and lasts until nightfall on Saturday.
- During Shabbat, Jews focus on study, prayer, and rest.
