When You Visit a Synagogue
- A synagogue is a place for prayer and study.
- It will usually contain:
- Ark: Holds the Torah scrolls.
- Bimah: A platform where the Torah is read.
- In Orthodox synagogues:
- Men and women sit separately.
- There are often separate entrances for men and women.
- Jewish men wear a kippah (a brimless cap), and married Jewish women cover their heads.
- Visitors are encouraged, but not required, to cover their heads as a sign of respect.
- Security is often present, and uniformed officers are generally welcomed.
- If visiting, engage with security personnel as they may have important information to share.
