Sikhism

Origins and Beliefs

The Sikh tradition began over 500 years ago in the Punjab region. The first guru, Guru Nanak, taught a faith in one immortal being and emphasized leading a life of service to humanity. Sikhs believe in one God, and this belief is summarized in the ‘Mool Mantar’, the first hymn written by Guru Nanak. It begins: “There is only one God. Truth is His name. He is the Creator. He is without fear, He is without hate.”

Sikhs believe God has no physical qualities and can therefore have no images. God is present in all people and all things, which is why Sikhs believe in the equality of all human beings. The Sikh place of worship, known as the Gurdwara, is open to all, and everyone is welcome to eat in the communal kitchen, called the Langar.
