Customs
- Traditional Taoists may follow a vegetarian diet as part of their religious practices.
- Religious books and articles should be stored respectfully, wrapped in clean and clear bags. Detainees should be allowed to handle and remove these items themselves.
- Taoist funeral ceremonies involve an altar with a sacred lamp, two candles, tea, rice, and water. These items symbolize various aspects of life: tea represents Yin, water represents Yang, and rice symbolizes the union between them.
- Funeral ceremonies are typically held in the deceased's home and last for an odd number of days.
- Five plates of fruit are used to symbolize the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) and ensure the body is healthy. An incense burner is placed among these elements to purify and refine the soul.
- During the vigil and funeral, the relatives of the deceased wear white, and a candle is kept lit for the deceased until burial.
